THE CAUSE, THE FACTS
SUPPORT OUR TREK EVEREST: ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME AND HELP BUILD A NEW HYBRID OPERATING ROOM FOR MARKHAM STOUFFVILLE HOSPITAL
Every year at Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH), 28 surgeons perform over 21,000 surgical procedures for cancer, gastrointestinal, obstetrical, orthopaedic, urologic, plastics, vascular, as well as preventative and diagnostic procedures such as biopsy, colonoscopy and endoscopy.
The hospital must continue to respond by offering additional services and increasing capacity but we need your help.
To meet increasing volumes, the hospital needs an additional operating room (OR) designed for the specialized needs of fluoroscopy — or real-time x-ray video — an essential tool used in many types of procedures such as kidney stone removal. This will immediately benefit the urology program as well as enable future growth opportunities for other surgical procedures. In this exciting new era, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) can help patients return quickly to their normal lives, and technology including fluoroscopy is key. MSH is a leading facility in MIS procedures with almost 70 per cent of surgical patients returning home the same day.
This hybrid fluoroscopy-equipped OR will increase the capacity for surgical procedures and help reduce wait times.
The new suite will be double the size of our other ORs to accommodate specialized equipment including a fluoroscopy table. The equipment will be suspended from the ceiling on booms to keep it out of the way of the surgical team and help maximize space. It will provide a flexible and adaptable environment while empowering our surgical staff to function at their best.
